Alberta is one of the premiere
spots in North America for big mule deer especially in
the prairies on the 3 day hunt areas. The 3 days you can
hunt are any Thursday, Friday or Saturday in November.
You can expect to do quite a bit of walking and some driving
on public and private lands. Most of the deer are taken
at less than 250 yards, but shots over 300 yards are not
uncommon. The weather is usually a cool 25-50 F with snow
very likely.
Additional rifle mule deer hunt information
Three days may not seem like much time to search for a
good buck, but the wide open, practically treeless country
allows for good hunting from daylight to dark. You end
up with as many hours of hunting as most 6 day hunt where
the deer can hide in the trees in the middle of the day.
These deer do not migrate in or out of the hunting area.
We bowhunt the area throughout September and October,
so we know just what the quality of bucks is come November.
Every hunter wants to know the best time to come on this
hunt, there is no good or bad time, only different circumstances
to deal with.
The first hunt of the season is when the rut is starting,
the most bucks are alive, and they aren't traveling much
yet. Usually we try to get certain bucks seen during the
archery season. The only downside is that this is the
hunt with the most resident hunting pressure, and bucks
in the no-hunting areas are staying put. The weather is
generally a bit warmer.
The rut usually picks up during the second hunt, and peaks
during the third and fourth hunts. There are fewer hunters
about, as well as a few less bucks, but the rut causes
the bucks to move more, hide less, and are easier to spot,
especially if it snows. The limited resident draw allows
many of the larger bucks to survive into the fourth hunt,
and the next year. There is also an increased chance for
cold, snowy weather, which can be a positive for deer
movement. We have harvested large bucks during all four
weeks, so come when it is most convenient for you.
