Alberta is now recognized as one of the best spots in
North America for big mule deer, especially in Southern
Alberta where we hunt. We hunt thousands of acres of open,
rolling country with very few trees. Four days may not
seem like much time to search for a good buck, but the
wide open, practically treeless country of Southern Alberta
allows for good mule deer hunting from daylight to dark.
You end up with as many hours of hunting as most 6 day
hunts where the deer can hide in the trees in the middle
of the day.
The mule deer do not migrate in or out of the hunting
area. We bow hunt the area throughout September and October,
so we know what the quality of the bucks are come November.
You can expect to do some driving and walking on private
and some public lands. Most of the deer are taken at less
than 250 yards, but shots over 300 yards are not uncommon.
The first hunt of the season is when the rut is just starting
and they aren't traveling much yet. Usually we try to
get certain bucks that we have seen during the archery
season. This hunt has the most resident hunting pressure,
and bucks in the no-hunting areas are usually staying
put, however, the potential to take a trophy mule deer
during this time is still great!
The rut usually picks up during the second hunt, and peaks
during the third and fourth hunts. There are fewer hunters
about, as well as a few less bucks, but the rut causes
the bucks to move more, hide less, and become easier to
spot, especially if it snows. The limited resident draw
allows many of the larger bucks to survive into the fourth
hunt, and the next year. There is also an increased chance
for cold, snowy weather, which can really help the deer
movement.
We have harvested large mule deer during all four weeks
in November, so come when it is most convenient for you.
